A post promising a pumpkin spice latte recipe begs me to open with pretty descriptions of changing leaves, sweater weather and crisp morning air. But that’s not really how autumn works here in Arizona.
While cacti don’t change colors or shed their spikes in the “fall,” I am enjoying the slight drop in temperature. Even 10 degrees is making a huge difference from the triple digits. The mornings are just chilly enough to be comforted by a hot latte, rather than sweating while I drink it (I won’t drink iced coffee no matter how hot it is!).
We might not be experiencing fall like other parts of the country, but September/October still means the same thing for us folks in the desert: We want our pumpkin spice lattes!
Now, I’ve never been one to make my own fancy coffee drinks – I’m usually a black coffee kind of gal – but I’m also not one to pass up cliche things that declare a new season is here. Especially with the absence of that seasonal weather, I’m playing with pumpkin and apples as much as I can in these next couple months.
But I am not a fan of paying $4-$5 for a drink that is full of artificial ingredients (many chain coffee shops don’t even have pumpkin as an ingredient in their pumpkin spice latte recipe!). If I’m going to indulge in a sugary coffee drink, I want it to at least be as natural and wholesome as possible.
Thus, I set out to have my own Naturally Ever After with a pumpkin spice latte recipe. This concoction is dairy-free and made with real ingredients like pumpkin, Arizona honey, almond milk, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon and vanilla – that’s it! You can even get a little wild and throw a drop of an essential oil if you really want to spice things up.
The result – after some fun experimenting and lots of taste-testing – was a sweet brew with a hint of autumn spice that brings all the heartwarming feels of a fall day…right on my Arizona patio.
I was actually really surprised by how much I loved this pumpkin spice latte recipe. Blending the mixture gives it that frothy, coffee-shop texture that you think just isn’t possible to do yourself.
Trust me, it is! And it’s worth it.
DIY Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe
Start by brewing a cup of coffee. I’m a fan of Cafe Don Pablo’s organic coffee grounds, and I love using our new French Press! It makes a really rich cup of coffee, the perfect base for your pumpkin spice latte recipe.
When your coffee is ready, pour it into a saucepan along with your almond milk, coconut milk, honey, creamy pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice, loads of cinnamon (always) and vanilla.
If you’re feeling extra zazzy, add a drop of Cinnamon essential oil. But be careful to add only 1 drop! Cinnamon oil is highly potent, and it’s not for everyone. If you can handle it, the oil tastes amazing and adds a smell to your home that will make you insanely happy.
Simmer the coffee and pumpkin goodness over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes, whisking occasionally.
Then, carefully, transfer the mixture to a blender. Cover the top with a towel in case there’s a mess. (It also helps to know how your blender works, not that I had any trouble….)
Blend on high for about 15 seconds until your drink is foamy and looks delicious.
Pour into your favorite fall mug, get out a good book and a blanket and enjoy a fall day…
…or a fairly crisp morning with your cactus 🙂
