Do you rely on coffee to wake up in the morning? Do you ever wish you could get by without it?
I LOVE coffee. In fact, I used to drink about 5 cups a day! But when I gave it up for Lent this year, I couldn’t believe how much better I felt. No more icky-gut feeling, much more regular digestion (TMI, I know), and, to my surprise, more energy throughout the day.
Unfortunately for people with IBS or any digestive stress, coffee can be bad news. And if you’re already mentally stressed or anxious, caffeine adds to the burden by increasing your heart rate, blood pressure and levels of stress hormones. While coffee may give us that feel-good energy boost we’re looking for, it can also boost all of the negative energies in our bodies.
I knew I wasn’t physically feeling great with all the coffee I was drinking, and I wanted to experience more natural energy. Now I have a morning essential oils routine that helps me to get moving.
How to Use Essential Oils in the Morning
There are 3 main ways to reap the benefits of essential oils – aromatically, topically and internally.
Aromatic
Diffuse uplifting essential oils in a diffuser, or simply inhale the scent from the bottle. If you practice silence or meditation in the morning, diffuse oils in the room you’re in. I like to diffuse oils in the living room during my “Tea with God” time.
Topical
Apply a few drops of essential oils on the bottoms of your feet. This method provides the quickest entry to the bloodstream. I also apply them on my wrists so I can smell them at any time or the temples for a more localized effect. When applying essential oils on your skin, be sure to dilute them with fractionated coconut oil if your skin is sensitive.
Internal
Only Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) essential oils are safe to consume internally. A drop of oil in your water or tea (and yes, coffee if you must!) can aid in cleansing and energizing the body in the morning.
Self-Love with a Morning Essential Oils Routine
My morning essential oils routine starts the minute the alarm goes off. I have a roll-on blend on my nightstand that I rub on my wrists and inhale to help me jump out of bed happy.
Jump-out-of-bed-happy roll-on blend
Fill a roller-bottle with:
- 10 drops Frankincense
- 10 drops Peppermint
- 10 drops Wild Orange
- Top it off with fractionated coconut oil
This blend combines oils best known for their energizing properties. Another roll-on to start the morning with is the uplifting blend.
*I get my roller-bottles from AromaTools.com. They have tons of glassware and accessories for your essential oils!
Encourage good health
- Protective blend on bottoms of feet
- A drop of Frankincense under the tongue
These oils promote healthy immune, cellular and respiratory function while giving off an uplifting aroma.
Wake up internally
Use one drop of one of these oils in your water or tea:
- Lemon
- Wild Orange
- Grapefruit
These citrus oils cleanse and detox the body, as well as rev up our metabolisms for the day.
Energizing shower
Place a couple drops of one of the following essential oils on the floor board of your shower and breathe in the aroma:
- Peppermint
- Wild Orange
- Respiratory blend
- Melaleuca
Ah, natural energy!
Meditate with meaning
Diffuse oils while you meditate, read or journal in the morning. Whatever your form of silence, essential oils assist in setting the mood. When diffusing oils, place about 3-4 drops in the diffuser and fill with water. Try the following:
- Frankincense, either by itself or really with any other oil that you like.
- Citrus oils are best known for their uplifting and energizing properties. They also smell hella-good!
- Encouraging blend – this aromatic combination of citrus and peppermint is heavenly! And sorta life-changing.
Be good to yourself
Essential oils also assist in balancing your emotions. These are a few that I use for a little self-love:
- Reassuring blend for peace – roll-on over my heart
- Clary Sage for clarity – either on the temples or in the diffuser
- Grounding blend for calmness and tranquility – on wrists, bottoms of feet or in diffuser
Happy Oiling!
