What quality of ingredients do you allow to enter your body?
The average woman puts 515 synthetic chemicals on her body every day without realizing it. 515!!! And what we put on our skin is most often absorbed into our bodies.
From the foods we eat to the beauty and household products we use, quality is essential. The same goes for your essential oils. Whether you’re diffusing them in the air you breathe, applying them to your skin or, especially, if you’re ingesting them, pure quality essential oils are the only way to go.
But wait – aren’t quality essential oils expensive?
I get it – when my husband and I first started trying out essential oils a few years ago, we had no idea what to look for. We just wanted to find the cheapest products. There’s no scarcity of cheap oils out there, but we also found that there are no results when using cheap oils. Although the oils we found on Amazon were cheap, they were a waste of money.
Fortunately, my sweet mother was willing to spend a little more to find the good stuff. She shared some of her new quality essential oils with me, as I was looking for help with managing stress and constant stomach aches. The oils worked so well for me that I became hooked. I dug deeper to learn why quality matters… and why the price for quality was so much higher.
It all comes down to: You get what you pay for.
So, why is quality important? And how can you trust that the product you bought is pure?
In Day 2 of this Essential Oils 101 mini-course, I’ll help you learn how to find quality essential oils that are safe to use and effective in delivering results. If you missed the first post in this series, check out What is an Essential Oil? first!
Full disclosure: I am a wellness advocate for doTERRA. I have nothing bad to say about other specific major brands, but doTERRA is what has always worked best for me. I fully support their brand and mission and have had incredible experiences, which is why I want to inform you on their oils.
Why Does Quality in Essential Oils Matter?
Quality essential oils matter for two big reasons – safety and effectiveness.
Essential oils are meant to heal the body, uplift the mood and aid in preventative health. To get those benefits, you breathe in the oils, apply them on your skin and sometimes even ingest them. (Don’t worry – in the next post of this series, I’ll show you the best ways to use essential oils and provide more safety recommendations.) However you use them, you want to make sure what you’re using is safe for your body.
And yes, safety is an issue with many of the essential oils you’ll see on the market today as quality is often compromised in these products. Any products that contain synthetic fillers, chemicals or toxins should not be used on your body and certainly should not be ingested.
Essential oils are not closely regulated by the FDA. This is why the cheaper oils might look just as appealing as the $90-some bottle of Frankincense (though not all quality essential oils are that pricey, I promise!). Just about every product will say “100% pure” on their label, but labels can be misleading.
A bottle of essential oil that claims to be 100% pure may still be laced with synthetic chemical compounds and additives. In some cases, there may only be very little of the actual healing essential oil found within the product.
When quality is compromised, you might experience negative side effects like itchiness or skin irritations. A true essential oil delivers only side benefits, not side effects.
Secondly, you want to buy essential oils that work or else you’re just wasting your money. Pure essential oils can have a powerful effect on the body. Those that are adulterated contain very little of the plant’s oil, which is why they’re not going to work as well.
An oil’s effectiveness depends on how it is sourced and harvested. For the oil to deliver the healing powers of the plant, the plant must be grown in a climate where it is known to thrive. The plant’s chemical properties depend heavily on the soil and temperature of its roots.
Think of it like an orange grown in Iowa versus an orange grown in Florida. The Florida orange will taste much better because that region is the crop’s native habitat.
I like to think of essential oils and natural products like processed food versus wholesome food. Fast food and processed food are always cheaper than foods made with high-quality ingredients. But we all know what’s better for our bodies.
When we eat junk, we feel like crap and lose steam and energy easily. Quality foods help us feel our best. The same goes for essential oils.
And again, you get what you pay for.
How Do You Know if You Have Quality Essential Oils?
The first test you can do is open the bottle and take a big whiff. One factor of a quality essential oil is the product’s aroma. Quality plant sourcing – when the plant is harvested in the right soil and climate – leads to a strong and pleasant scent. The more pure and sweet the scent, the better the oil’s sourcing and the greater its purity.
Secondly, research the brands you’re curious about. Understand how the company sources their oils and tests them. These are the things company’s should be testing for:
- Authenticity: The oil’s composition should be equal to the plant specified on the label. The bottle should not contain a mixture of plant species.
- Genuineness: The bottle contains no other substances, synthetics, agents, diluents, additives or other contaminants.
- Purity: Improper methods of growing, harvesting and distilling essential oils can lead to the development of synthetic essential oil variations. Scientific analysis is needed to identify a pure essential oil.
- Potency: Climate and soil composition have the ability to affect the potency of plant matter, so oils should be harvested in their native habitat to deliver the most benefit.
Why I Choose doTERRA
As I stated earlier, I am a wellness advocate for doTERRA essential oils. I fell into the company after my mom had gone to an essential oils class. When I saw such awesome results from the oils Momma shared with me, I got hooked on their products and wanted to dive deeper into what this company was all about.
I wanted to share these natural gifts with my friends as well, because I surely wasn’t the only 20-something dealing with stress, anxiety and the pressure of trying to figure it all out. But first I had to find out what made doTERRA so legit.
doTERRA, Latin for “gift of the Earth,” has been around since 2008 and is now a leading brand of essential oils with over 1 million wellness advocates supporting their products. I trust this brand of essential oils for (at least) three reasons:
1. Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) Testing
doTERRA has developed its own testing standard for every single essential oil the company bottles and sells. This rigorous process ensures that there are no added fillers, synthetic ingredients or harmful contaminants in the essential oils. Every product goes through a series of tests to ensure potency, purity and consistency. Learn more about doTERRA’s CPTG testing process.
doTERRA sources their oils from all over the world, harvesting from over 40 countries where the climate is best for those plants – Lavender comes from France, Lemon comes from Italy, Frankincense comes from Somalia, and so on.
More than half of these areas are considered developing countries. Through doTERRA’s Co-Impact Sourcing initiative, the company is developing long-term partnerships with suppliers and providing sustainable jobs and income for families in underdeveloped areas. Learn more about doTERRA’s Co-Impact Sourcing initiative.
3. Serving Others
doTERRA isn’t known only for their quality essential oils but for their initiative to share those oils and other resources with people and communities in need. The company started the Healing Hands Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps free communities of disease and poverty and empowers them with the tools needed to become self-reliant.
Proceeds from certain products, such as the Hope essential oil blend and the Rose Oil Lotion, all go directly to the foundation. Loyalty Rewards customers can also choose to donate to Healing Hands with each purchase they make.

Don’t Skimp on Quality
The bottom line is that if you’re going to use an essential oil for any reason, it’s “essential” that you get the best quality. And the hard truth is that quality essential oils will tend to be pricier than what you see in a health foods store. Why?
Because true, pure essential oils are rare and hard to source.
Rose essential oil, among the most expensive, takes approximately 1,160,000 freshly picked rose petals to produce only one ounce of oil! The labor-intensive production and distillation process yields very little oil, making this romantic and floral aroma a challenging one to come by.
Be leery of essential oils that are under $10, because they likely contain fillers and very little of the healing oil you’re after. You don’t want to pollute nature’s beautiful healing solutions with society’s contaminants.
You have the power here. Take charge of your health and treat your body with what it’s worth – the best, quality ingredients and products you can find.
